The Shumard Red Oak is fast-growing deciduous tree,
with an open canopy and stout spreading branches. It
grows tallest in moist, well-drained soils, reaching up
to 120 feet. Shumard Red Oaks are never found in large groves
- they occur singly and far apart. Leaves are a rich green, that can turn scarlet in autumn. The Shumard's leaf resembles that of the Nutall Oak, (Quercus nutalli) but is not as deeply lobed, and its acorns are have a shallower cup. The Texas Red Oak (Quercus texana), Chisos Red Oak (Quercus gravesii) and Shumard Oak are all closely related but differ in their ranges. |
