Grower's Notes:
This unique plant resembles a palm tree but is actually a a cycad. It is a living fossil, is a member of the Cycadaceae family, the principal plants of Mesozoic era over 150 million years ago. The Sago Palm is native to Japan's southern-most islands, a subtropical area of high rainfall and warm temperatures.

It is very slow gowing, taking decades to attain its mature height. Plant in sandy, fast draining soil, preferably with some organic matter. It needs good drainage or it will rot. While the Sago Palm is drought resistant when mature, adequate moisture is needed for good growth. In roomy, brightly lit situations, it is common for pups to form at the base so that the plant grows into a large clump. Single trunk specimens are more likely in shady locations. It is hardy to 15 - 20 F.  With our warming climate the probability of experiencing such a severe winter freeze has diminished.

The distinctive leaves grow 4 to 5 feet in length and are about 9 inches in width. Leaves are composed of a rigid midrib with glossy leaflets arranged in a plane along its length. These leaflets are revolute which means that they curl under along their edge - this attribute provides the plant's species name (Cycas revoluta).

Sago plants are either male or female.  As the tree matures it develops prominent reproductive structures.

The male structure is a yellow rod-shaped cone that grows 12 - 18 inches.

The female flower is a globe shaped yellow structure in which scalelike leaves cover bright red seeds that are about 1.5 inches in diameter.

This is a wonderful plant for the shrub border, as an accent on an expanse of lawn, near the patio, entryways, or in rock and sand gardens. It mixes well with palms. It is also an excellent container plant for outdoors and in the home.
