River Birch's
distinguishing characteristic is its outstanding peeling
cinnamon-colored bark. It is best adapted to moist soils.
Although it is extremely heat tolerant, in dry years it
will shed inner leaves if it does not receive sufficient
moisture. The female trees have inconspicuous green flowers, and male tree flowers are brownish catkins. The females produce a small nutlet in 1" to 1.5" long catkins. The fine textured foliage can turn a good yellow in autumn but soon drop. The trunk is often divided into several large arching branches close to the ground (i.e. clumping). |
