The Nuttall Oak is found in bottomlands,
floodplains and drainage basins of east and northeast
Texas. It grows well with winter flooding and year-round
moisture and in areas that are waterlogged and
oxygen-deficient. It will withstand a great variability
in pH, but cannot tolerate shade. A young tree has a narrow pyramidal crown which, with maturity, becomes broad, open and wide-spreading. The Nuttall Oak's leaf resembles that of the Shumard Oak, (Quercus shumardii) but is more deeply lobed, and its acorns are have a deeper cup. The Nuttall Oak generally provides red color for the Houston fall landscape. |
