Bald Cypress is
a deciduous conifer of ancient origin that is widely
planted in Texas as a shade tree. Its layered branches
with dark green needle-like leaflets give it an feathery,
fine-textured appearance. The trunk is fluted and flares
at the base. In fall the leaflets turn to a bronze color,
and wrinkled, rounded cones are produced. It is very
closely related to the Montezuma
Cypress. It is native to swamps and rivers in east and central Texas. Once established, it can tolerate standing water or rather dry sites, but does best in wetter areas and in acid to neutral soils. In wetter situations, the bald cypress can develop "knees" - woody conical growths from the roots - whose exact function is not known. Bald Cypress is extremely long-lived. It is often listed as slow growing, but is actually a rapid grower if fertility is good and water is available. |
